The basics

Huanglong sits in the same Minshan range as Jiuzhaigou, roughly 120 to 140 km apart and more than two hours by road. The park is known for terraced travertine pools that shift between blue, green and gold with the minerals and the light.

How to visit

Take the cable car up to the top, then walk down through Five-Color Pond, Zhengyan Pond, Gold Sand Beach and Welcome Pond — about 2.9 km, two to three hours one way. The route is mostly a gentle descent, which is far less tiring than climbing both ways.

What to see

  • Five-Color Pond: high in the park, hundreds of pools stacked in tiers — the densest concentration of colour at Huanglong.
  • Zhengyan Pond: tightly packed pools with strong contrast between colour bands.
  • Gold Sand Beach: a golden travertine flow spreading down the slope for about 1,300 m.
  • Welcome Pond: near the entrance, with pools set at irregular levels.

Altitude

Huanglong sits higher than Jiuzhaigou, with the entrance already close to 3,000 m. Slow down, drink water little and often, and use the oxygen points inside the park if you feel a headache, breathlessness or nausea; seek medical help if symptoms get worse.

Combining with Jiuzhaigou

The usual pattern is Jiuzhaigou on day one and Huanglong on day two, with about two hours of driving between them and accommodation at Zhangzha or Chuanzhusi. If you only have one day, concentrate on Jiuzhaigou.

FAQ

Can I visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong on consecutive days?
Yes, and it is a common plan: Jiuzhaigou on day one, Huanglong on day two. The two are about 120 to 140 km apart, more than two hours by road.
What should I know about the altitude?
The entrance is about 2,000 m and Long Lake about 3,100 m. Avoid strenuous activity and alcohol on arrival and walk at an easy pace. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure or are pregnant, consult your doctor first.
How do you get around inside the park?
Shuttles run along the main valleys with several stops and you can get on and off freely. Boardwalks are separate from the roads — walk on the boardwalks. Riding to the top and walking down is the easiest pattern and gives the best light.
What if the park closes or there is a force majeure event?
If severe weather or a temporary park closure stops you entering, contact customer service as soon as you can and we will arrange a refund or a new date.
